Interview With Dr. Roy BrabhamAlan: Hello everyone. I'm Alan Velotta, and I'm pleased to have you join me for what I know will prove to be a most enlightening presentation. We'll be discussing the incredible new supplement from Velocity International Marketing, Maximum Velocity, with Dr. Roy Brabham, head of Velocity International Marketing's Health Advisory Board. Dr. Brabham, thank you for joining us. Dr. Brabham: Alan, it's my pleasure to be here. Alan: There is certainly an incredible amount of interest in Maximum Velocity. What is it about this product that has so many people so stirred up? Dr. Brabham: We designed Maximum Velocity to address 2 problems that burden just about everyone in today's world – lack of energy and constant stress. It turns out that these 2 problems are closely related, so it's possible to deal with both of them at the same time, and that's what Maximum Velocity does. I like to call it energized stress relief. Alan: Would you explain that? Dr. Brabham: Sure. Our bodies have a mechanism for dealing with stressful situations that we call fight or flight. This gives us a quick burst of energy to deal with the source of the stress. Our distant ancestors might have found themselves face to face with a threatening animal, for instance. If it was something big and strong, like a tiger, they would flee. If it happened to be smaller and easier to deal with, like a snake, they might kill it or run it off. In either case, the quick burst of energy would be useful. Alan: That's obviously something that would promote survival, but how is the energy burst generated? Dr. Brabham: There is activation of a part of the nervous system known as the sympathetic nervous system. This system, which controls circulation, respiration, digestive activity, pupil dilation, and other functions that help us respond quickly to the external environment, goes into overdrive. It also carries signals to the adrenal glands and prompts them to release cortisol, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. These are hormones that quickly boost metabolism and make fuel available for immediate use by our muscles and other body systems. At the same time this is happening, the pituitary gland releases a hormone that signals the adrenal glands to release more epinephrine and norepinephrine, both of which increase staying power for the fight or flight. Alan: So what role does the fight or flight mechanism play for those of us living in the world today, and how does it affect us? Dr. Brabham: Unfortunately, we face entirely different kinds of threats, and we typically can't escape them. Instead of a menacing tiger in the jungle, we are more likely to be facing an angry boss or client at work. Instead of fleeing an approaching hurricane, we find ourselves stuck in rush- hour traffic. Things such as constant calls from bill collectors when we don't have enough money to pay the bills, co-workers who may try to undermine our work and threaten our job security, and now the fear of international terrorism, are very real threats to our physical and emotional well-being. It's just that the old stand-by fight or flight response doesn't remove them. Alan: And common sense would tell us that our bodies can't maintain a heightened response stance for prolonged periods of time without experiencing ill effects. Isn't that right? Dr. Brabham: That's exactly right, Alan. Our hearts can't keep pumping faster than normal without eventually starting to wear down. Blood pumping harder and faster to increase our chances of escape from a predator eventually begins to break down our blood vessels when the “predator” threatens for years at a time. When our adrenal and sympathetic nervous systems are in a constant state of overdrive, we have difficulty sleeping and exhaust our energy reserves. Feeling irritable, tired, and physically unwell becomes our miserable norm. Alan: That describes all too many of us. It's definitely a problem looking for a solution. Tell us how Maximum Velocity is designed to deliver the solution. Dr. Brabham: To begin with, all of the ingredients in Maximum Velocity contribute to energy support directly. Over half of the ingredients are potent adaptogens, which counter the wear-and-tear effects of chronic stress. Adaptogens help keep body functioning on an even keel, calming down some activities and boosting others. These also contribute indirectly to energy support by countering the sympathetic and adrenal overdrive that so many of us are in, and which uses up energy reserves to no avail. Finally, 4 of the ingredients in Maximum Velocity are very good at boosting circulation. This brings oxygen, nutrients, and the other ingredients more efficiently to the cells and tissues where they exert their effects. Alan: Could we go over the ingredients in the Maximum Velocity formula in more detail? Dr. Brabham: Certainly. I like to put them into 2 groups – traditional herbal compounds that have been in use for centuries, and some compounds that have only been recognized and put to beneficial use in recent years. Alan: Let's start with the traditional ingredients. Dr. Brabham: OK. There are extracts of 2 outstanding medicinal mushrooms, Cordyceps and Reishi. Cordyceps is particularly well known for boosting energy and circulation, and it has adaptogen activity as well. Reishi is a very potent adaptogen that also supplies energy and helps overcome fatigue. Both of these, but Reishi in particular, support healthy immune function. Alan: How do they do that? Dr. Brabham: Adaptogens in general support immune function indirectly by reducing the effects of chronic stress, which tend to impair the immune system. These 2 mushrooms also contain several compounds known as complex polysaccharides which directly signal the immune system to function as it should. Another Maximum Velocity ingredient with strong adaptogen and immune signaling activity is Astragalus root, an herb long revered in traditional Chinese medicine. Its components also boost energy and counter fatigue and weakness. Alan: What other traditional herbs are in the formula? Dr. Brabham: There is Rhodiola Rosea, an arctic herb traditionally used in Siberia and Scandinavia. It is well known for boosting both physical and mental energy, and has strong stress-countering activity. Panax Ginseng is also in the formula. It is highly regarded for boosting energy and circulation, and also has adaptogen activity. Finally, the formula contains the most widely consumed herbal compound on Earth, caffeine. Alan: Aren't there some negative effects on the body from consuming too much caffeine? Dr. Brabham: There can be, but recent studies have shown that caffeine has benefits for most people in amounts below 360 mg, which is 3 times the amount in a regular serving of Maximum Velocity. A 3 capsule serving of Maximum Velocity contains a little less caffeine than a typical cup of brewed coffee. Alan: What are the benefits that caffeine brings to Maximum Velocity? Dr. Brabham: As most people are aware, caffeine provides a quick increase in alertness and concentration. It also boosts physical performance capacity, as demonstrated in scientific studies. Caffeine increases circulation, and this is part of another benefit that is not commonly recognized. Alan: What would that be? Dr. Brabham: Caffeine is a potentiator of active ingredients in many over-the-counter and prescription pain relievers. It enhances the absorption, distribution, and impact of these ingredients. These effects can also be used to advantage in products such as Maximum Velocity. Alan: Tell us about the other group of ingredients in Maximum Velocity, the ones you said have only been recently recognized and used. Dr. Brabham: Certainly. One of these is the amino acid L-Arginine. It is acted on in the body to produce nitric oxide, which causes blood vessels to relax and increases circulation. This helps deliver more oxygen and nutrients to cells in the body, which assists energy production. It also helps better distribute the other ingredients in Maximum Velocity throughout the body. Alan: Those sound like some really useful effects. Dr. Brabham: They are. In fact, the scientists who showed how nitric oxide is produced from L-Arginine in the body and the beneficial actions it has in the body were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1998 for their work. Alan: Wow! So what else have you put in the Maximum Velocity formula? Dr. Brabham: The last 2 ingredients are the trace mineral Selenium, and the amino acid derivative N- Acetylcysteine, or NAC. These work as a pair to help generate the antioxidant Glutathione, which is considered to be the most important antioxidant inside cells. Glutathione is needed for efficient production and maintenance of energy sources in cells. It is also critical for the health and proper functioning of liver cells, particularly in detoxifying activity. Alan: Obviously important, but why not just have Glutathione in the formula? Dr. Brabham: Good question. Unfortunately, when Glutathione itself is consumed, it is largely destroyed by the digestion and absorption process. This leaves us with taking precursors that will allow the body to generate Glutathione. NAC is the primary one of these. Selenium is necessary as a trace mineral co-factor for the enzyme that converts NAC to Glutathione. There are many areas where soils and foods grown in them are deficient in Selenium, so it is a good idea to have it along with NAC to be sure that there is adequate generation of Glutathione. Alan: Well, there's certainly an impressive group of ingredients in Maximum Velocity, and obviously a lot of thought went into bringing them together. How do you take this product? Dr. Brabham: Maximum Velocity comes in capsule form, and the standard serving size is 3 capsules taken together. Most people take the product once daily, and take it in the morning. The timing can be adjusted to individual needs. Some will find that they prefer to take Maximum Velocity at lunch time or in the early afternoon. Alan: Is it OK to have more than 1 serving per day? Dr. Brabham: Sure. I can't imagine that anyone would need more than 2 servings in a day, though. If they do take 2 servings, I recommend 1 serving in the early morning, and the second in the early afternoon. Alan: What about people who are sensitive to caffeine? Dr. Brabham: I recommend that these people start with a 1 capsule serving. If they do OK with that, they can move up to 2, then 3 capsules at a time as tolerated. Most people, even those who are sensitive to caffeine, will not have any problem tolerating Maximum Velocity because of the balancing effects of the adaptogens in the formula. Alan: Are there any issues with banned substances for athletes? Dr. Brabham: No. Both the NCAA and the IOC (International Olympic Committee) have limits on the amount of caffeine allowed for competition, but these limits are quite high. An average-sized person would have to consume 7 or 8 three capsule servings of Maximum Velocity all at once to even approach these levels. None of the other ingredients in Maximum Velocity are restricted by the governing bodies for sports. Alan: That's good to know. Now let's get to what people are really interested in. How will Maximum Velocity make them feel? Dr. Brabham: That will be a little different for each individual, since the situations of stress will vary from person to person. Just about everyone will note a nice increase in overall energy. This is a smooth energy boost, not one that leaves them jittery and “bouncing off the walls.” It is a type of energy that helps them focus on tasks at hand and get a lot done quickly and efficiently. The majority of people note that they feel really good when taking Maximum Velocity. It's what I refer to as a peaceful, easy feeling. Alan: Elaborate on that. Dr. Brabham: It has to do with the adaptogen effect, breaking the harmful effects of chronic stress. Because of this, people taking Maximum Velocity feel calmer, more relaxed, and on an even keel. They typically sleep better and wake up feeling very refreshed. Alan: Are there any other benefits that people can experience from Maximum Velocity? Dr. Brabham: One unexpected, but nice effect that we have found the product to have on many people is a reduction of appetite. We did not design Maximum Velocity to be a weight-loss product, and we do not actively promote it as such, but there have been quite a few people who have experienced a significant decrease in their weight while taking this product. Alan: Well, it's clear to me that Maximum Velocity is an incredible product that provides energized stress relief and more. Dr. Brabham, I want to thank you for sharing this interesting and useful information with us. Dr. Brabham: It's been a pleasure, Alan |
